Mental health while looking for work

Simple steps for handling stress, knock-backs, money pressure and confidence while applying for jobs.

Job hunting can wear people down

When applications go unanswered, it can feel like you are being ignored or judged. Most knock-backs are not personal. Employers are usually sorting by location, tickets, experience, timing and availability.

Keep pressure smaller

  • Apply for a set number of jobs each day, not all day until you burn out.
  • Keep a list of where you applied so you do not feel lost.
  • Fix one part of your profile each week: resume, phone script, tickets, references or transport plan.
  • Talk to one safe person before pressure builds too far.

When to get help

If you are not sleeping, not eating, angry all the time, using more alcohol or drugs, or thinking life is not worth it, get support now. In Australia call 000 for immediate danger, Lifeline 13 11 14, or Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636.
